Birthday Paradox

What is it?

Imagine there are 23 people in a room. Do you think any two of them share the same birthday?

The first reaction is usually: "There are 365 days, 23 people is nothing! The chance of a match must be tiny." But the truth is: In a group of just 23 people, the probability that two share a birthday is over 50%.

Yes, it sounds strange. It's called a "paradox" because it goes against our intuition.

The key is: People usually focus on "the chance someone shares a birthday with me." But this problem is about "any two people" sharing a birthday.

Group Size:
23 people
